Meet Estefania. When an explosion caused by a gas leak leveled an adjacent apartment complex in Dallas' Oak Cliff neighborhood in late spring, it left Estefania and neighbors without gas service for more than a month. As a result, she was faced with what felt like an impossible situation: Provide for a household of four, keep her family safe, and care for her daughter who had asthma, all while living in increasingly uninhabitable conditions.

Our Disaster Preparedness and Relief Services team stepped in with emergency hotel assistance and housing case management services to help Estefania navigate the difficult path toward stable housing. Through a partnership with Mission Oak Cliff and local property management providers, she received eight months of rental assistance and was approved for an apartment where her family could safely begin again.

Today, Estefania continues to build a brighter future for her family while helping others do the same. She has become an advocate for all 19 of the Spanish-speaking families that also were affected by coordinating communication, sharing information, and ensuring families stayed connected to those offering assistance throughout the recovery process. All affected households have now successfully secured new housing and are moving toward stability. What started out as a housing disaster became a story of resilience, community, and the power of neighbors helping neighbors.

Leviticus 19:18 — “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
