Funds to increase access to SNAP Program, healthier food for low-income households

DALLAS (March 19, 2020) – Catholic Charities Dallas (CCD) has received a $10,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation, in partnership with Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), for a region wide outreach effort to make residents aware of the Federal Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and to provide enrollment assistance to eligible low-income families and individuals, including seniors.

SNAP is the nation’s largest domestic hunger safety net program and works with state, nonprofit, and private sector partners to improve awareness of and access to better nutritional and healthy food choices. This is CCD’s first year participating in the SNAP enrollment program; the organization will use the funding to educate and enroll individuals and families through existing CCD programs. Annually, CCD serves more than 50,000 individuals in need throughout the nine-county area of the Catholic Diocese of Dallas.

“This grant provides us with the necessary resources to expand outreach to individuals and families in need and ensure they have access to benefits that are available to them,” said Dave Woodyard, President/CEO of CCD. “One of our primary mission areas is the alleviation of hunger, and the SNAP outreach program complements the work we are already doing in providing nutritional food through our community-based food pantries, client choice pantry and mobile community pantries.”

The Walmart Foundation creates opportunities for people to live better.
