Despite Recent Gains, Hunger Remains Big Challenge in North Texas
Nationwide, 48 million people — including 14 million children — are unsure of where their next meal is coming from, according to recent statistics released by Feeding America.
The organization’s annual “Map the Meal Gap” study shows that more than 6 million Texans didn’t have enough food to feed their families in 2024 (the most recent year for which statistics are available), which represents an 11 percent increase from the previous year. This number also keeps Texas ahead of California as the state with the most people experiencing food insecurity as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Locally, our nine-county service area averages 15.6 percent, with Navarro County having the highest need at 20.4 percent and Rockwall with the lowest need at 10.8 percent. Dallas County sits near the top of the range at 19.2 percent, or nearly one in five residents who are unsure of their next meal, up from 15.6 percent just four years ago.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, our volunteers, and the funding we receive, however, CCD is doing something about it.
During the 2025-2026 fiscal year, our Hunger Services mission distributed more than 16 million pounds of food to those in need, which represents an increase of nearly 60 percent over the previous year. That equates to millions of meals for those who are experiencing food insecurity, across all age groups in our community.
How Does the Program Work?
At our fixed client choice pantries, clients can shop for food at a fixed location that is convenient, safe, and clean. Our mobile community pantries, meanwhile, travel to more than 90 sites throughout North Texas to bring fresh food and a helping hand to local neighborhoods.
This life-changing program is open to a wide range of families in need, including those facing a temporary crisis due to natural disasters and homelessness, those receiving government benefits, and those who fall under federal poverty guidelines, with no proof required.
Hunger Services by the Numbers:
- 16 million+ pounds of food were distributed in 2025-2026.
- This amounted to 13 million+ meals for families and individuals in need.
- 220,000+ clients were served at our network of fixed and mobile pantries.
- 139 unique mobile pantry sites were used across nine counties.
