Legal Orientation Program For Custodians (LOPC)
Donate Now to Support CitizenshipThe Legal Orientation Program for Custodians (LOPC) is a nationwide program that provides services to the custodians (sponsors) of unaccompanied alien children who are, or have been, under the care of the Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Refugee Resettlement (DHHSC-ORR).
Under the LOPC program ILS participates with counterpart organizations in nine other major US cities that receive the largest number of unaccompanied alien minors.
Information & Orientation
Program staff reaches out to the potential custodians of these children and informs them of the responsibilities related to being a custodian.
When a child is released to a custodian, it is important that the child’s immigration case be followed very carefully and that the child appear for all immigration court hearings scheduled in his/her behalf.
ILS orients the custodians about the immigration court process and conducts a legal assessment of each child’s case. When possible we refer these children to social and legal services that they may qualify for.
Family Support
Custodians frequently encounter daunting challenges as these children adjust to their new surroundings.
ILS remains in close contact with the custodians to continually assess the child’s eligibility for immigration relief, and to refer the child and custodian to community services that can support them.
