The Community Health Clinic (CHC) has provided compassionate and high-quality health care to vulnerable and underserved families in Collin County for nearly 20 years. Last spring, CHC and Catholic Charities Dallas (CCD) formed a strategic alliance to allow for the sharing of administrative resources, expertise, and personnel, creating economies of scale while also increasing access for both organizations’ clients.

Juanita is one of the clients CHC has served over the years.

When Juanita’s husband passed away, her world turned upside down. She was under significant stress, and her blood pressure was skyrocketing. Juanita knew she should see a doctor but could not afford health insurance. Her co-worker recommended that she make an appointment at CHC.

Juanita’s first visit to the clinic was 15 years ago. CHC quickly became a lifeline for her, especially her physician, Dr. Gini Holter.

“If it had not been for the clinic, I don’t think I would be sitting here,” Juanita said.

Juanita managed her blood pressure with the help of the CHC and Dr. Holter. When other health issues arose, Juanita knew she would be cared for at the clinic.

“If I had medical issues going on, Dr. Holter would always figure it out with me.”

Like the other providers at CHC, Dr. Holter is a volunteer, Dr. Holter started volunteering at the clinic in 2010 because she wanted to serve individuals who lacked access to the medical care they needed and deserved.

“I see the results; I see the difference we make for the community we serve,” Dr. Holter said. “I see the difference I make for the women I treat, and I can tell it matters. I do not know where many of them would get their care otherwise.”

Approximately 150,000 people do not have health insurance in Collin County. Steve Wurm, CCD Director of Health Management Services, said the clinic does what it can to make a difference in the community.

“The Community Health Clinic plays an important role in filling the gap in healthcare equity in Collin County, especially among those living with chronic health conditions,” Wurm said. “We offer hope for a better quality of life for the individuals and families we serve.

Juanita said the clinic has significantly improved her life, thanks to her relationship with Dr. Holter and the other providers at the clinic.

“They have helped me through my medical issues. They sit down with me and explain what is going on,” Juanita said. “The personal communication at CHC, you do not get that with some of the other doctors.”

CHC offers a wide range of services. Staff and volunteers provide primary care and treatment of acute and chronic diseases, women’s wellness services, pediatric care, counseling, and prescription assistance. In the future, CHC and CCD hope to expand the services beyond Collin County to serve clients throughout the Diocese of Dallas.

With a shared legacy of serving and empowering the most vulnerable members of the communities in which they work, CHC and CCD are well-positioned to combine resources and offer more people the benefits of a secure medical home.
